Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) which is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhea. Gonorrhea can be very dangerous and can cause serious health problem if it is left untreated like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which is lead to abdominal pain in women. It is one of the most common diseases which is passed from one person to another during sexual activity. Gonorrhea affects both women and men and can infect the anus, urethra, rectum, throat and cervix. Gonorrhea is also spread from mother to baby at the time of delivery. More than 700,000 are affected from gonorrhea every year in United States.

Causes of Gonorrhea: Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria Neisseria gonorrhea. Anyone who has any type of sex can affect from gonorrhea. The infection of gonorrhea is transmitted from one person to another through sexual relation, vaginal and oral.

Men have 20% risk to get the infection by having a sexual relations with a woman infected with gonorrhea. Women have 60 to 70% chance getting the infection from a single act of vaginal intercourse with an infected man. It is transfer from infected mother to her baby during vaginal childbirth. Other causes are due to multiple sexual partners, drug addiction, heterosexual, homosexual and men and women.

Differential diagnosis for Gonorrhea: If gonorrhea is untreated then it leads to different disease like :

Infertility: Infertility describes that couples who have never been able to become pregnant.

Meningitis: Meningitis is an infection of the fluid which cover the spinal cord and brain of person. Meningitis is a disease which is usually caused by number of infection like bacteria or viral infection.

Septicemia: Septicemia is a serious, life-threatening infection in which large amount of bacteria is present in the blood.

Pelvic inflammatory disease: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of a woman's pelvic organs including the cervix, Fallopian tubes (tubes), ovaries and uterus (womb).

Symptoms of Gonorrhea: Usually the symptoms of gonorrhea are appearing in 2- 5 days after infection. Some time people have no symptoms and both men and women have different symptoms. Some time symptoms can take as long as 30 days to appear.
Gonorrhea Symptoms in Women:
• 30 to 40% infected women have no symptoms and it is possible to know about the infections.
• Increased urination
• Change in vaginal discharge; change to a greenish or yellow color, it may appear in abundance and develop a strong smell.
• Painful sexual intercourse
• Pain when urinating
• Low abdominal or pain or pelvic tenderness
• Heavy bleeding with periods
• Pain during sex
• Fever, rashes

Gonorrhea Symptoms in men:
• Increased urinary urgency or frequency
• Red or swollen opening of penis (urethra)
• A white or yellow discharge from the penis
• Discharge and irritation from the anus
• Swollen or Tender testicles
• Sore throat
