What are Mumps?
Mumps are a contagious viral disease of the human that leads to painful swelling of the parotid glands also known as saliva glands. Mumps is caused by a virus that usually affects to children but adults can also get it. Mumps spread through saliva and infect many parts of the body like in cheek, neck, below your ears and near your jaw line, these glands become painful and swell. Mumps is that disease which is spread form one person to another through the infected person release virus in the air. Mumps is disease which recovers completely and no long term mark left. Mumps symptoms are seen in 14 to 16 days, during the time virus will multiply in the cells and increase the level of circulating in bloodstream.
Causes of Mumps: Mumps are caused by virus (paramyxovirus), many other infections disease is caused by this virus. It is mainly infected salivary glands and reproduces which located below and in front of the ears. It is spread by direct contact of infected person. Mumps can spread by many ways like sneezing or coughing by this virus released in to the air and enters in another person's body, using the same plates of infected person, kissing of an infected person drink and share food with someone who is infected by mumps. Usually children’s are affected by mumps. Mumps also infect the pancreas, central nervous system.
Differential Diagnosis of Mumps: Mumps is an infectious disease which cause several disease like :
Parainfluenza, influenza, HIV infection
Diabetes [About Diabetes]
Sarcoidosis [About Sarcoidosis]
Staph infection in the parotid gland
Malignancies of the parotid
Viral meningitis [About Viral Meningitis]
Symptoms of Mumps: Mostly the symptoms of mumps are developed in 14 to 20 days. Many children’s have no symptoms. The most common symptom of mumps is swelling and pain of the salivary glands. These glands are located just below your ears. Some other common symptoms of mumps are:
• Facial Pain
• Fever
• Swelling or soreness of the parotid glands both side of your face.
• Weakness and fatigue
• Loss of appetite
• Dry mouth
• Nausea and vomiting
• Abdominal Pain
• Testicle pain
• Sore throat
Seek medical care if anyone has these serious symptoms.
Prevention of Mumps: For the prevention MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine protect against mumps should be given to children. People have to talk with health care provider.
Treatment of Mumps: There is no specific treatment for mumps but if the symptoms are occurring then take proper medical care by your doctor. Doctor will suggest pain relieving medicine to relief pain, drink plenty of water and eat food properly and some therapies are help. Prescribe the doctor advice for best treatment.
