Cyanosis Causes, Symptoms and Treatment


Cyanosis is that condition in which the blood is poorly oxygenated. When we breathe our lungs take oxygen which goes into our blood. Cyanosis is a bluish hue to the gums, fingernails, skin or mucous membranes which is caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood. When there is lack in oxygen supply then blood becomes bluish red and dark purple, when blood is fully oxygenated then it becomes bright red. Mainly cyanosis is caused by lack of oxygen in the blood. Some time cyanosis makes the skin blue gray or skin in light-skinned people look dusky. Cyanosis can be classified into peripheral and central. In central cyanosis the blue discoloration affects to tongue lower and upper lips. In peripheral cyanosis only peripheral body parts become blue which affects to feet and hand.

Causes of Cyanosis: The causes of cyanosis is caused by abnormal hemoglobin, abnormalities of the heart, the lungs, abnormal blood flow(right to left shunt ), breath holding or an lack of oxygen. Other causes are such as choking or suffocation, disorders, as cyanotic heart disease. Central Cyanosis can occur during child birth. Central cyanosis caused by respiratory system, nervous system and cardiac disorders. Heart muscle is the cause of peripheral cyanosis. Methemoglobinemia is one of the cause cyanosis it occurs from over production of abnormal hemoglobin.

Symptoms of Cyanosis: The symptoms of cyanosis are depending on the disease, condition or disorder. Respiratory symptoms will occur with cyanosis like:

• Difficulty in breathing
• Chest Pain
• Shortness of breathing and rapid breathing

Other symptoms are:
Anxiety
• Enlargement of nail or skin beneath
• Irritability, problem in sleeping young children
• Puffy eyes or face
• More headaches
• Loss of consciousness or confusion

Precaution from Cyanosis: Avoid alcohol, drugs at the time of pregnancy. The women’s who are pregnant received prescription for medicines. Avoid stress and any possible exposure after delivery. For any kind problem during pregnancy consult your health care provider.

Treatment of cyanosis: The treatment which is normally used to Cyanosis is surgery. There are many types of surgery which is depending on the type of birth defect. The child may need to take water pill and other medicines before and after surgery for this you need to stay in the hospital. Ask your child's doctor before getting any immunizations. Follow all the medicines prescribed by doctor.

What is Asterixis? Asterixis is a type of movement disorder characterized by arrhythmic flexion movements of hands evoked by dorsiflexion of the wrists and outstretched arms.
