Ulcerative Colitis Causes, Symptoms and Treatment


What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory disease of the large intestine called ulcer which cause ulceration of inner lining and inflammation of the colon and rectum. Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. The inflammation usually begins in sigmoid colon and rectum and produce redness, pus and bleeding which cause diarrhea and abdominal pain. When entire colon is affected it is called pan colitis and left side of colon is affected it is called distal or limited colitis. It affects both men and women equally and run in families. It occurs at any age common in the ages of 15-40 and less common in 50-70.

Causes of Ulcerative Colitis: The exact cause of ulcerative is still unknown. But some causes are genetic factor, it appears run to families, Aggregation of ulcerative colitis in families. Environmental factor: some diet which may encourage inflammation, smoking, breastfeeding, other childhood infections, excessive heat or exposure of the sun and watching too much violent movies. Autoimmune disease is also the cause of ulcerative colitis. It affects many area of the body.

Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis: Ulcerative colitis symptoms is depend on the inflammation location and the common symptom of colitis is abdominal pain, here are number of condition which affect the bowel like bacterial, viral or parasitic infection. Some of the symptoms are:

Anemia (About Anemia)
Fatigue and weight loss
Loss of appetite
Loss of nutrients and body fluids
May be constant pain
Fever and other infection
Joint pains, sores inside the mouth, skin lesions
Blood in bowel movement may be present or not
Growth failure in children


Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis: There is no cure for this disease but there is treatment to control the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. Take proper medical care by your doctor. Number of therapies to reduce the symptoms like drug therapy, anti-inflammatory drug such as Mesalamine, Sulfasalazine and Corticosteroids, hospitalization a person must be hospitalized if it has severe bleeding, surgery to remove massive bleeding. Some surgeries like Ileostomy and Ileoanal anastomosis, surgeries is depend on the patient needs. Early treatment is necessary because some time it may cause life-threatening complications.
