What is Cushing’s syndrome?

Cushing’s syndrome is a hormonal disorder which is caused by high level of the hormone cortisol refers to the emotional and physical difficulties. It is complex hormonal condition which affects many parts of the body like fatty hump between shoulders, round face, purple and pink stretch marks on your skin. The common cause of Cushing’s syndrome is hypercortisolism. Cushing syndrome may also result in bone loss, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Causes of Cushing's syndrome: Cushing's syndrome is occurs when body expose to excessive levels of cortisol and the common cause is steroid medication, corticosteroid medications. These drugs are used to treat inflammatory disease like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Too much cortisol is caused by when pituitary gland makes too much hormone and produce cortisol. Adrenal tumor often causes Cushing’s syndrome these cases involve non-cancerous tumors which release cortisol in to the blood. Men’s are affected more than women. Other risk factor is high blood pressure and obesity.

Differential diagnosis: Cushing's syndrome is a combination of other causes like

• Anxiety (About Anxiety), Depression (About Depression)
• Obesity (About Obesity), poor controlled Diabetes (About Diabetes).
• HIV Infection


Symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome: Common symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome are skin changes obesity increased fat around the neck thinning legs and arms. Symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome may develop slowly. Some sign and symptoms are:

• Fatty hump between the shoulder and back of the neck
• Pink or purple stretch marks of the skin
• Spot on the face, shoulder or chest
• Heavy sweating
• Back pain, abdominal pain
• Easy brushing
• In women’s irregular menstrual periods
• Muscle weakness
• Irritability, depression and anxiety
• Loss of emotional control
• Lack of urination
• Men have decreased fertility and libido
• Other symptom is kidney stone and hyperglycemia


Precautions of Cushing’s syndrome: Do not use medication on the face, groin areas and under arms, treated skin area should not be bandaged. Use all medicine which is prescribed by your health care provider. Report all the symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome to your doctor.

Treatment of Cushing’s syndrome: Cushing's syndrome is caused by another medical condition or prescribing a different drug which may indicates of Cushing's syndrome. Doctor will include radiation, surgery or medication treatment to own cortisol levels. Surgery help to remove well-defined pituitary adenoma, radiation treatment is used when pituitary tumors cannot be delete completely by surgery and medication is used to control both surgery and radiation therapy don't work. Doctor will help to lower your dose and stop it. Don't stop your medicine on your own. Discontinue your medicine after consulting by your doctor.
