What is Osteomalacia?

Osteomalacia is disease refers to the softening of bones caused by lack of vitamin D deficiency resulting weakness in muscles and bone pain. In children this condition is called rickets (rickets is disorder which is caused by lack of vitamin D). Osteomalacia is occur when our body is not get enough proteins and minerals and cause lack of vitamins due to this the bone becomes weak and break down fast. Osteomalacia is mostly affects to adults, some conditions that affect to children. Osteomalacia is also leads to bone fracture due to a weakness of previously constructed bone.

Causes of Osteomalacia: Osteomalacia is occur when a person don't get enough mineral and protein in diet. The common cause of osteomalacia is lack of vitamin D or calcium. Body needs vitamin D to process calcium. Lack of vitamin D is occur due to some reasons like don't get enough diet, not enough exposure to sunshine, some medications, certain surgeries of your stomach which break down food to release vitamin D, liver or kidney disorders, some drugs can cause osteomalacia. Due to lack of vitamins the bones and muscles become weak and break very easily.

Differential Diagnosis: Osteomalacia is a disorder and there is several different disorders causes by osteomalacia like hypocalcaemia, hypophosphatemia, myeloma, osteitis fibrosa.
Symptoms of Osteomalacia: In early stages the symptoms of osteomalacia have not appeared. The cause of osteomalacia has result number of symptoms like:

• Bone fractures which happen with very little injury
• Weakness in muscles, arms and legs
• Painful bones, especially in hips, legs and ribs
• Inability to move body part
• Abnormal heart rhythms
• Coldness and numbness in the area of fracture
• Spasms felt in the hands and feet


Precaution from osteomalacia: Increase diet rich in vitamin D and calcium it is the one ways of preventing osteomalacia. Eat dairy product, soya bean, leafy green vegetables, oily fish and eggs. Expose body to enough sunlight because sun is natural source of vitamin D. Take supplement to absorb nutrient properly.

Treatment of Osteomalacia: Treatment of osteomalacia is start by your health care provider. Doctor will take blood test to check vitamin D, calcium and phosphate level, bone x-ray and bone density test. Doctor will recommend oral supplements of Vitamin D, bone nutrients and calcium. If any symptoms occur then take appointment by your health care provider.
