What is Amnesia?

Amnesia is a condition resulting in loss of memory because of brain hemorrhage. It can be last for two hours, two months or few hours for a long time. Many people have amnesia in the form of a transitory "blackout”. Amnesia may also involve a total loss of memory about the period or event. In severe cases, people not only loss his past memory but also have painful event, period of time and his or her identity. Person who has amnesia lives only with present no collection of the past. This loss of memory occurs due to some brain hemorrhage, head injury, stroke, psychological experience or a result of disease such as trauma or stress. Some common types of amnesia are:

Anterograde Amnesia: In this condition the person short term memory is impacted due to injury to the head which causes brain trauma.

Retrograde Amnesia: In this condition memory loss for events before brain hemorrhage.

Lacunar amnesia: This type of amnesia create blockage in your mind.

Transient Global Amnesia: This type of amnesia affected to those people who are in middle age, the patient loss all memory for a temporary period of time and normally caused when blood vessels.

Korsakoff syndrome: This condition is caused due to intake of alcohol or chronic drug.

Posthypnotic amnesia: In this type individual mind keeps unfit to remember which has been a part of your long memory.

Blackout phenomenon: Amnesia is caused by heavy drinking alcohol and person cannot remember chunks of time.

Causes of Amnesia: Amnesia is the result of brain damage that forms the limbic system, which controls your memories and emotions. Memory function engaged many different parts of brains. Most often amnesia is caused by brain damage or head injury to the parts of brain. Brain damage or head injury can occur from oxygen deprivation, head injury include car accidents, can lead to memory problems. Encephalitis, use of specific drugs, Tumors in areas of the brain, some seizure disorder, Degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and stroke. There also may be a genetic factor of dissociative disorders usually from close relatives who have similar disease. Some emotional causes occurs amnesia like Child abuse, Sexual abuse, torture being present during a terrorist act and physiological stress.

Symptoms of Amnesia: Amnesia is a condition in which person has loss his memory due to several conditions usually caused by physical injury or damage to the brain. People, who have amnesia difficulty in learning new things, have problems with short-term memory. Let's see several symptoms of amnesia:

• Partial or total loss memory
• Not remember past events or previously information
• False memory, real memory misplaced.
• Inability to recognize place
• Neurological problems such as tremors or seizures, uncoordinated movements
• Confusion or disorientation
• Fail to recognize faces and movements
• Weakness of brain, lack of attention in person
• Suffer from depression or anxiety


Precautions of amnesia: Amnesia can be prevented when all kind of damages are avoided means person should be attention such as using seat belt, wearing helmet, avoiding the use of alcohol and drugs. Take proper diet and avoid stress.

Treatment of Amnesia: In these condition proper counseling and psychic analysis is necessary. Doctor will begin and performing a complete medical history and take physical examination. Doctor may check the patient long term memory and short term memory and deciding the best treatment. Treatment will include therapies like:

Psychotherapy: This therapy helps to encourage communication and increase insight to problems.

Cognitive therapy: This therapy focus on changing behaviors, feelings and dysfunctional thinking patterns.

Family therapy: Teach about the family members. Family support is crucial to get better results.

The aim of treatment is compensate memory problem. In this condition person require a immediate medical attention.

What is Asterixis? Asterixis is a type of movement disorder characterized by arrhythmic flexion movements of hands evoked by dorsiflexion of the wrists and outstretched arms. It is an involuntary tremor of the wrist loss of sustained contraction of the arms against ones will. It is produced by lapse of sustained posture. Mainly it causing hand tremors and the tremor occurs in both wrists and is not rhythmic characterized by metacarpophalangeal joints, jerky, irregular movements at the wrist and often accompanied by lateral movements of the fingers.
