What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is a yellowing color of the skin, eyes or mucus membranes. Jaundice is also known as icterus. It is just like pigmentation which causing yellowish color over the eyes and the skin. It is caused by the increase level of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment which breakdown from hemoglobin and elimination of red blood cells in the body. The color of skin is depend on the level of bilirubin when it is in middle level then they are yellowish, when bilirubin in high level they tend to be brown. Three types of jaundice:

Hepatocellular jaundice: It occurs with a result of liver disease.

Hemolytic jaundice: Occurs with a result of hemolysis which increases in production of bilirubin.
Obstructive jaundice: In this condition there is blockage of the flow of bile out of the liver.

Causes of jaundice: Common cause is when too much bilirubin builds up in the body that may result jaundice. Our body replaced red blood cell with new one processed by liver. Jaundice can occur when too many red blood cell break down or dying. The liver is damaged or overloaded. Bilirubin becomes high level then it causes several effects like brain damage or cerebral palsy. Other causes are gallstones, cancer of the pancreas, certain drugs, including an overdose and cirrhosis.

Differential Diagnosis: Some disease which cause the risk of jaundice like:

Gallstone
Cancer
Hepatitis
Cirrhosis, Malaria
Liver disease, Blood disorders

Symptom of Jaundice: The first symptom is skin color turning yellowish, eye and dark yellowish colored urination. Urine color is yellow because of increase bilirubin in our liver. Some symptoms which may appear in jaundice:

Abdominal Pain
Itchy Skin
Brown or dark Urine
Headache, fever and fatigue
Vomiting and diarrhea
Weakness
Difficulty in breathing
Lack of urine or stool

Precautions of Jaundice:
Avoid exercise when you are suffering from jaundice
Avoid oily food, snakes or fast food
Wash hand after going the toilet
Drink sugarcane juice, tomato juice, lemon juice or Gourd Leaves, Barley Water, eat leafy vegetables.
Drink lots of water or eat Glucose


Treatment of Jaundice: If symptoms will develop then contact to health care provider. For the treatment of jaundice doctor will take all history and physical exam. Treatment is depending on the cause of jaundice. Doctor will prescribed will medical treatment like medication or antibiotic, exchange blood transfusions may be required to decrease bilirubin levels. Surgical treatment may also require.

What is Asterixis? Asterixis is a type of movement disorder characterized by arrhythmic flexion movements of hands evoked by dorsiflexion of the wrists and outstretched arms. It is an involuntary tremor of the wrist loss of sustained contraction of the arms against ones will. It is produced by lapse of sustained posture.
