What is Hives?

Hives is also known as urticaria. Simply meaning of hives are red welts, raised, itching appear in varying shapes and sizes on the surface of skin. Hives are appear anywhere on the body like throat, lips, face or ears. Rashes produce an allergic reaction to medicine or food. Hives can change size and move around one place and reappearing in other place. There are some types of hives:

Acute hives: This type of reaction is usually less than six weeks. It is usually caused due to food allergen.

Chronic hives: This type of hives appears at least six week or more. The cause of chronic hives is unknown yet.

Physical hives: Mostly caused by scratching or due to cold, sunlight, heat, exercise or fresh water. These skin reactions generally appear after rubbing and disappear with in 30 minutes.

Solar hives: Solar hives are caused on areas which have been exposed to sun. It occurs very rarely. Solar hives appear immediately into the sun and disappear about an hour.

Cholinergic hives: This hives develop after exercise, sweat, generally it appear upper body.

Aquagenic hives: Aquagenic hives usually caused by with water or reaction to the chemical inside the water.

Causes of hives: Specific cause cannot be defined. Hives are caused by allergic reaction from food, insect sting or medications. Some causes are:
• Infection especially in children
• Allergic food, medicine, detergent soap and cosmetics
• Due to physical or emotional stress
• Due to sunlight, cold pressure or water
• A previous case of angioedema or hives
• Family history, members who have hives
• Tobacco, alcohol and coffee also increase the risk of hives
• Caused by low blood pressure


Symptoms of Hives: Hives are skin allergy and cause various symptoms like:
• Slightly raised, red or pink or swellings on the skin
• Incredibly itchy, rashes
• Welts that occur over a large area
• Swelling in Skin
• Loss of consciousness
• Rapid or irregular heart beat
• Faintness or Dizziness


Precautions from hives:
• Avoid showers or hot bath
• Avoid allergic medicine, food alcohol drink.
• Avoid irritating cloths and tight-fit cloths
• Avoid direct sunlight
• Reduce stress
• Try to sleep in a cool room

Treatment of Hives: Immediately contact you doctor because some time hives become life threatening problem your doctor will examine your disease and ask full history of your disease or may take some test blood test. Doctor may prescribe medicine or injection. To improve your health just follow the doctor advise and must seek good dermatologist.
