Mitral Stenosis Causes, Symptoms and Treatment


What is Mitral Stenosis?

Mitral Stenosis is relative to heart disease in which the heart's mitral valve is narrowed (stenotic). It is a heart valve disorder which involves the mitral valve which separates the two left chambers of the heart and the left ventricle and the left atrium which can reduce the amount of blood which supplies the body. This abnormal valve blocking blood flow and pumping chamber of heart then mitral valve becomes thickened and immobile. The mitral valve is mainly caused by an infection called rheumatic fever that can cause significant cardiac problems.

Causes of Mitral Stenosis: Almost the mitral stenosis is caused by congenital heart disease, infection of the heart valves or a rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever may damage the mitral valve or may cause the leaflets of the mitral valve to fuse somewhat together, Other condition which increase the risk of mitral stenosis are family history, stroke, body stresses, cardiac disorders, radiation treatment to the chest, heart disease in pregnancy, with aging or kidney disease, bacterial endocarditic and some medications.

Symptoms of Mitral Stenosis: The most common symptom is shortness of breath. Some mild problems can occur like:
Fatigue, tiredness
Heart palpitations, fluttering or rapid heartbeat
Chest discomfort, Radiates to the neck, jaw or arm
Cough
Swelling of ankles or feet
Frequent respiratory infections, such as bronchitis
Blood in the sputum


Treatment of mitral Stenosis: For the treatment of mitral stenosis tell all the history of other infectious disease or family history of congenital heart diseases to your doctor. The treatment is depending on the condition of heart and lungs. Hospitalization may require to for diagnosis. Doctor will recommend some medication to treat symptoms or abnormal heart rhythms that include beta-blockers, nitrates, calcium channel blockers and many more. He will take chest x-ray, ECG to know the history. Doctor will suggest some surgery with a less damaged to repair the mitral valve.
