What is Cardiomyopathy?

Cardiomyopathy is the disease of heart muscle. In this the heart muscle becomes thick, enlarged, weaker or rigid, less able to pump through the body and not able to maintain regular rhythm which leads to irregular heartbeats, heart failure, disability or death. Cardiomyopathy can cause high blood pressure or heart attacks. Types of cardiomyopathy are:

Dilated cardiomyopathy: Dilated cardiomyopathy is condition in which heart becomes large and weak and cannot pump blood effectively. It mostly occurs in adult. Men are more affected then women.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: In this Cardiomyopathy heart becomes thick and stiff. This is usually passed through families. Sometime it leading cause in younger people.
Restrictive cardiomyopathy:It occurs when heart become stiff and cannot fill with blood. Some features are similar to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia: It is a rare type of cardiomyopathy develops when muscle tissue in the right ventricle dies and replace with scar tissue. It cause problem in the heart, usually develop in young adult or teens.

Causes of cardiomyopathy: Mostly the causes of cardiomyopathy are unknown, Doctor may identify some risk and factors like:

• Long-term high blood pressure
• Familiar condition acquire during the childhood
• Drug abuse
• A family history, heart failure, or sudden cardiac arrest
• Long-term alcoholism
• Excessive use of alcohol
• Disorders such as diabetes or thyroid
• Heart tissue damage, heart attack problem



Differential Diagnosis: Some other health disease causes the risk of cardiomyopathy problem like.
Obesity (About Obesity)
Diabetes (About Diabetes)
Thyroid disease (About Thyroid)
Heart problem and infections
Long term High blood pressure (About Blood Pressure)


Symptoms of cardiomyopathy: The symptoms of cardiomyopathy is develop gradually over a periods of year. Some symptoms are:
• Shortness of breath: It occurs during activity like at the time of sleeping, while lying down.
• Fatigue: feeling tired due to decreased blood circulation.
• Swelling of the feet and legs:
• Weight gain
• Irregular heartbeats and fluttering or pounding
• Changes in urination
• Chest pain
• Heart palpitations, heart beating rapidly and irregularly
• Change in mental alertness: Due to less circulation of oxygen
• High Blood pressure

Precaution: Doctor always suggests to change lifestyle to manage this condition. Some precautions are:
• Avoid Smoking
• Avoiding illegal use of drugs and alcohol
• Reduce stress and take full rest and sleep
• Take healthy diet includes vegetables fruits and grains

Treatment of cardiomyopathy: Heart problems may treated by many ways. Doctor will take all past medical history which include high cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure and take some tests. Treatment is fully focused on the cause of condition. Cardiomyopathy is treated by drugs which include calcium-channel blockers and beta-blockers used to improving function. Different type of surgeries are used for cardiomyopathy like septal myectomy surgery, doctor may provide number of medicine which help to keep your heart beating normal, reduce inflammation, prevent blood clots, low your blood pressure. Doctor may also recommend life style changes like quit smoking, avoid alcohol and so on. So, take proper care and medicines which is prescribed by doctor and make sure to all of your checkups.
