What is Spinal stenosis?
Spinal stenosis is abnormal narrowing of one or more areas in your spine and everyone will experience low back pain. It may occur in the center o your spine most often in your lower back and neck. About 75% cases are occurring in the lower back which can cause pain along the back of the leg. Stenosis affects equally men and women, most common over 50 years old. Mostly adult people are affected. Types of spinal stenosis include:
Lumbar stenosis: Lumbar stenosis is narrowing of the spinal nerve roots which compress the lower back or choked. It may affect younger person due to developmental causes. It can produce numbness or weakness in to the legs and buttocks.
Foraminal stenosis: Nerve root leave the canal through a hole in the side of the spinal canal called the lateral foramen. Foraminal is common result of disc degeneration. Other causes of neural foraminal are arthritis, chronic meningitis, osteoarthritis and tumors.
Central stenosis: Central stenosis is a narrowing of the central spinal canal. It occurs when a bulging disc, herniated disc, and take up space on the middle part of the spinal column. Cervical stenosis frequently caused by aging and common in male and female. Symptoms are upper extremity numbness, radicular pain in the upper limb and muscle wasting.
Causes of Spinal stenosis: Spinal stenosis is congenital disorder cause from person to person. The most common cause to develop is degenerative arthritis that results from ageing.
Some common causes include:
Aging: With the age the body's ligaments can thicken. Aging is the most common cause of stenosis.
Tumors of the spine: Abnormal growths of tissue inside the spinal cord by causing inflammation. Most spinal tumors are found between the spinal cord and the vertebrae, it can occur anywhere in the spine.
Heredity: spinal canal is too small present at birth may show in young person.
Trauma: Trauma is another cause of stenosis injuries and accident may either dislocate the spinal canal or cause fractures.
Paget's disease: Body generates new bone or results in enlarged and deformed bones or occurs in the spine and reduces the space in the spinal canal.
Symptoms of spinal stenosis: Most common symptom is low back pain as well as pain in the legs. Other symptoms include:
• Leg pain from either condition
• Numbness and tingling
• Lower back pain
• Muscle spasms
• Limitations in walking
• Weakness and disability
• Loss of bowel or bladder control
• Muscle weakness in the legs or arms
• Abnormal sensations
• Stroke may also include as symptom
• Stiffness in legs and thighs
• Problems with balance
• Pain in the arm, neck or shoulder
Precautions:
• Attend physical therapy prescribed by doctor
• Change your lifestyle directed by doctor
• Staying active and exercising
• Eat healthy food, stay hydrates, eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
• Avoid smoking and alcohol
Treatment of Spinal Stenosis: Treatment is depending on the severity of symptoms. Stenosis can be treated a combination of physical therapy, medication for chronic pain, activity modification and prescribed exercise. Doctor may prescribe steroid injections for temporary pain relief. Prescribe surgery to relieve form the pain on the affected nerve or your spinal cord. Some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are Celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Voltaren), Oxaprozin and many more.
