What is Addison's disease?
Addison's disease is also known as Chronic Adrenal.
Addison's disease is an endocrine or hormonal disorder that occurs all age of men and women. Addison’s is affects your body’s adrenal glands it occurs when adrenal glands not able to make enough hormones which result the underactive adrenal gland. The underactive gland produces insufficient amounts of corticosteroid hormones. Two adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. Addison's is referred to muscle weakness, low blood pressure, fatigue and skin darkening. Addison's disease can be life threatening problem.
Causes of Addison's disease: The most common cause of Addison’s was tuberculosis. It is caused by destruction or damage of the adrenal glands. These glands are located on top of each kidney and produce various hormones and responsible for regulating energy needs, body’s stress response, immune function, water and salt balance, and sexual development. It is also caused by gradual destruction or autoimmune disorder and also arises from infectious disease like HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and chronic fungal infections. Other causes are genetic defects, certain drugs, physical stress, family history hemorrhage or bleeding of the adrenal glands.
Differential diagnosis: Addison's is also caused by other disease like:
Dehydration (Dehydration means)
Tuberculosis (About Tuberculosis)
Depressed mood, Depression (About Depression)
Anxiety (About Anxiety) and fear
Symptoms of Addison's: The symptoms of Addison’s are progress slowly. Following are the common symptoms of Addison’s are:
Dizziness
Muscle weakness
Loss of appetite and weight loss
Low blood pressure
Ongoing fatigue
Headache
Vomiting and nausea
Sweating and skin darkening
Lack of hormones and motivation
Irregular menstrual period
Some serious symptoms
Gradual weigh gain
Change in mental status
Difficulty in breathing
Low back pain and abdominal pain
Swelling on ankles and infection
Treatment of Addison's disease: There is no cure of adrenal glands it is controlled by replacing the hormones. Tell all the medical history to your doctor. Doctor will perform some laboratory test like blood test to see to see if an autoimmune disease, ACTH stimulation test, this will check to see if your adrenal glands are damaged, imaging test to check the size of your pituitary gland and adrenal glands, test your blood sugar and cortisol level and some surgical treatment.
